Plasterer in Battle

Battle is roughly seven miles north of our base in Bexhill and, together with the villages around it, is a regular part of our working week. The town's historic High Street and the surrounding rural properties mean a lot of period work, alongside the extensions and new-build plastering that come with any growing market town.

Russ has more than 25 years of experience across both traditional lime plastering and modern gypsum systems, and will tell you straight which one your walls need.

What Battle properties need from a plasterer

Battle grew up around the Abbey, and its High Street conservation area is a run of medieval timber-framed, Tudor and Georgian buildings, many of them listed. Inside, that means wattle and daub or lath panels, lime plaster, and walls that move with the seasons. Modern hard gypsum on those walls tends to crack and trap moisture, so a breathable lime system, properly keyed, is usually the right specification.

Beyond the High Street, Battle has Victorian and Edwardian villas, mid-century estates and a good deal of newer housing on the edges of town, which is standard plasterboard and gypsum work. The villages around Battle, including Netherfield, Catsfield, Crowhurst and Whatlington, add farmhouses, cottages and barn conversions where a mix of both approaches is common.

Plastering in Battle: your questions

Yes. Russ is experienced in traditional lime methods as well as modern finishes. For a listed building we assess the existing wall build-up and recommend a lime-based, breathable system where the fabric needs it. Listed building consent for internal works is your responsibility as the owner, and we are happy to describe the proposed method to help with that.

Send a photo of the wall or room and Russ will tell you what it needs and roughly what it will cost.
