Float and Set

Float and set is the traditional two-coat system for bringing uneven blockwork or badly damaged walls back to a true, flat, durable finish.

Float and set is a two-stage plastering system built for walls that need more than a thin skim. The float coat is a thicker base layer, built up and ruled off level to correct unevenness in blockwork, brickwork, or badly damaged old plaster. Once it has firmed up, the set coat goes on as a thin, smooth finishing layer over the top.

This is the system Russ reaches for on new-build blockwork, extensions, and any wall where the substrate itself is out of true. Rather than trying to disguise dips and bows with a single thin skim, float and set physically corrects the wall's line and level before the finishing coat ever goes on, which is why it lasts.

It is also the right call for solid masonry walls in older properties where the original lime plaster has failed and been hacked off back to brick or stone. A proper float coat rebuilds a flat, structurally sound base that a skim alone could never achieve.

  • Bare blockwork or brickwork on a new extension or build

  • Walls that need real thickness and strength, not just a cosmetic finish
  • Renovation projects where the original lime plaster has failed

Our Process

  1. 1

Assess the substrate and rule out any damp or structural issues before plastering

  2. 2

Apply render beads or screeds to establish a true, level guide

  3. 3

Apply the float (base) coat, building it up to the guide and ruling it flat

  4. 4

Allow the float coat to firm up and take its initial set

  5. 5

Apply the set (finish) coat in a thin, smooth layer and trowel to a polished finish

Float and Set FAQs

Float and set is a traditional two-coat plastering system where a thicker base coat, the float, is applied and levelled to correct uneven or damaged walls, followed by a thin finishing coat, the set, trowelled smooth on top. It is used on new blockwork, extensions, and badly damaged masonry that a single skim coat cannot correct.
